Masala Chai – or Chai, for short, means spiced tea. Chai has been enjoyed in India for centuries; although, it is prepared differently and several regional variations exist. The ingredients of a Chai beverage generally include tea, heavy milk, several spices and a sweetener.
Originating in India, the beverage has gained worldwide popularity, becoming a feature in many coffee and tea houses. Traditionally prepared by a decoction of green cardamom pods, cinnamon sticks, ground cloves, ground ginger, and black peppercorn together with black tea leaves. In many places, there is a misconception that “chai” in itself is made with cardamom, ginger, and the other common spices.
