From Crop to Cup: The Journey of Our Coffee
The Process Behind Every Cup of Coffee
Every cup of coffee tells a story, a journey that begins long before it reaches your hands. From the lush green coffee farms of Colombia, Ethiopia, and Costa Rica, where our beans are sustainably sourced, to the final moment when the rich aroma fills your cup, each step of this journey is crafted to deliver the perfect brew. In this blog, we’ll take you through the entire process.
Coffee Farms
Our coffee journey begins in green coffee farms located in prime coffee-growing regions around the world. We source our beans from sustainable farms in countries like Colombia, Ethiopia, and Costa Rica, known for their unique climates and ideal growing conditions. These regions provide the perfect environment for coffee plants to thrive, producing beans with distinct flavours and aromas.
Harvesting
Once the coffee cherries are ripe and ready for harvest, skilled farmers carefully hand-pick them to ensure only the best cherries are selected. This process involves picking the cherries at their peak ripeness, which is crucial for achieving the perfect flavour.
Processing: Transforming Cherries into Beans
After harvesting, the coffee cherries undergo processing to separate the beans from the fruit. There are several methods of processing, including:
Washed Process
This method involves removing the cherry’s outer pulp and fermenting the beans to remove any remaining mucilage. The beans are then washed and dried, resulting in a clean and bright flavor profile.
Natural/Dry Process
In this method, the cherries are dried whole in the sun before the beans are extracted. This process imparts a fruity and sweet characteristic to the coffee.
Honey Process
This hybrid method involves removing some of the cherry’s pulp while leaving a portion to dry with the bean. The resulting coffee has a balance of fruity sweetness and clarity.
Each processing method contributes to the unique flavor profile of the coffee, and our expert team selects the best method for each batch to highlight its natural characteristics.
Roasting: Crafting the Perfect Roast
The next stage in the journey is roasting, where the green coffee beans are transformed into brown beans. Roasting requires precise control of temperature and timing to bring out the best in each batch of beans.
At Bristol Twenty we roast each coffee differently to achieve different flavours. Whether it's a light roast that highlights the bean's natural acidity and floral notes or a dark roast that brings out deep, chocolatey flavors, we ensure that every roast is tailored to perfection.
Cupping: Quality Assurance
Quality assurance is a critical step in our process. After roasting, our coffee undergoes a rigorous cupping procedure where it is evaluated for aroma, flavor, acidity, body, and aftertaste. This step ensures that only the highest quality coffee makes it to our customers.
Our cupping team consists of experienced tasters who meticulously sample each batch, looking for any imperfections and ensuring consistency with our flavor profiles. This commitment to quality guarantees that every cup of Bristol Twenty coffee meets our exacting standards.
Brewing: The Final Touch
The journey from crop to cup culminates in the brewing process. Whether you prefer a rich espresso, a smooth pour-over, or a comforting French press, the way you brew your coffee can significantly impact its flavour.
