Sumatra Gayo Natural is an 85.25 SCA-scoring Ateng Super from Indonesia, naturally processed and sun-dried. It offers vibrant notes of nectarine and stone fruit, complemented by a wonderfully juicy body.
The Sumatra Permata Gayo Cooperative (SPGC) was founded in 2014 with a simple belief: the people who grow coffee should have a stronger voice and a more direct connection with the people who roast and enjoy it.
Their journey hasn’t always been easy. Following several challenging years, SPGC began rebuilding its operations in 2022 with renewed energy and a clear purpose — to create a stronger, more transparent and sustainable cooperative for Gayo coffee farmers. What began as a rebuilding process has since grown into a community of more than 1,300 smallholder farmers across the Gayo Highlands.
Many of its members have grown coffee for generations on small family farms surrounded by the forests, mountains and distinctive landscape that give Gayo coffee its unique character. The cooperative works closely with farmer groups from harvest through to processing, continually improving quality while preserving the identity of the region.
Alongside the traditional wet-hulled process for which Gayo is famous, Permata Gayo has expanded into fully washed, honey, natural, anaerobic and experimental processing methods, allowing them to explore exciting new expressions of their coffees.
In November 2025, the community faced one of its most difficult periods when severe floods and landslides affected coffee-growing areas across Aceh, damaging farms, infrastructure and livelihoods. It was a powerful reminder that resilience isn’t just about coffee — it’s about communities standing together when circumstances are at their hardest.
Today, every coffee from Permata Gayo represents that journey. Behind each lot are families, farmer groups, mill workers and communities working together to bring exceptional Gayo coffee from the highlands of Sumatra to roasters around the world.
Through platforms such as Algrano, the cooperative aims to go beyond simply selling coffee. Their goal is to build direct, lasting relationships with roasters, share the story behind each harvest and create a supply chain in which producers and buyers can grow together.
From the Gayo Highlands to our roastery, this is a coffee with a remarkable story — and one we’re proud to share.
