What is Chai?

Did you know the word ‘Chai’ is actually the word for ‘tea’ across several cultures in Asia, Africa and Eastern Europe. What is referred to as ‘chai’ generally in the western world is more accurately called ‘masala chai’ or ‘spiced tea.’

Chai is a blend of black tea and spices such as cinnamon, cardamom, ginger and cloves. You can brew the Chai in water and then add milk, or you can simmer the Chai in a mixture of milk and water for a Chai tea or just milk to make a Chai latte.

Chai Tea Origins

It dates back more than 5,000 years, when a King in India ordered a healing spiced beverage to be created. The mixture of spices in chai tea has been known to have many health benefits, including boosting your immune system, improving digestion and is energy boosting. As the healing drink spread across India, a wide variety of spices were used to prepare the drink. The addition of black tea leaves, milk and sugar became popular thousands of years later.
